Q: Can I model piers with voids?

Question

I am modelling a multi-span bridge and the piers contain openings in the transverse direction - how do I model these in LimitState:RING?

Solution

The best method is to proportionally scale down the unit weight and compressive strength of the masonry units where the voids exist to account for the reduced volume of masonry that needs to be displaced.

To alter the unit weight:

1. Select the blocks (using the rectangle select tool)
2. Select "Block" in the Property Editor dropdown and change the "Unit Weight" property as appropriate.

To alter the compressive strength:

1. Select the contacts (using the rectangle select tool)
2. Select "Contact" in the Property Editor dropdown and change the "Crushing Strength" property as appropriate.
