Question
I would like to analyse a concrete arch structure. Can I do this in LimitState:RING?
Solution
Yes. One can modify the properties of a ring to approximate the presence of a concrete barrel. Simply:
- select the blocks and set their unit weight appropriately, then
- select the contact surfaces and set the crushing strength to that of your concrete.
If the ring is reinforced, and if the reinforcement is light enough to presume ductile behaviour, then you can add this also (see Chapter 17 of the User Manual).
When you solve, the contact surfaces will be treated as potential crack positions in the concrete. Therefore, if applicable, it may be appropriate to alter the number of blocks and the angle of the contact surfaces (by toggling "assume joints normal to intrados") in order to ascertain the sensitivity of the solution to changes in crack location and orientation.
